Compass Point: Hungry for Data by Sara Menker FII7

25 Oct 2023

Climate change is already impacting global agriculture, with regions like India facing potential losses of 9% in wheat production and significant disruptions to staple crops like rice. The consequences of inaction on climate change could undo decades of economic progress and pose significant challenges for human populations, including issues related to education, migration, and infrastructure. The need for innovation in seed technology and crop adaptation is crucial to mitigate the effects of climate change on agriculture. The current disruptions in crop production, such as droughts in South America and Southeast Asia, are evidence of the immediate impact of climate change. The map presented illustrates the potential future changes in arable land, with some regions becoming less suitable for farming while others become more viable. These changes will have geopolitical, economic, and social implications, including migration and shifts in global food production.
